Angela Bates is Screen Australia’s Head of First Nations Department. Previously, she was the Development and Investment Manager for Screen Australia’s First Nations Department, where she managed a slate of projects from Feature Film, TV Drama Series and children’s animation to documentaries, including We Are Still Here (a co-production between Australia and New Zealand), award-winning TV drama Total Control Series 2, Little J & Big Cuz 3, Looky Looky Here Comes Cooky, Maralinga and a new TV crime drama, True Colours. Angela hails from country New South Wales and is a proud Aboriginal and Maori woman.
She has a background in journalism and has worked at both the ABC and SBS. Her proudest achievement is setting up the first nightly National Indigenous television News service in 2008 as its inaugural Executive Producer, overseeing its rapid growth, including it’s free-to-air launch in 2012. Angela got her start at the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association in Alice Springs before travelling the country as a video journalist covering First Nations stories extensively for SBS’ Living Black. Angela has written, produced and directed live election panels, and a one-off travel show, Postcards in Taiwan. In 2012, she wrote, directed and produced a documentary for NITV, called Homelands. She graduated with a Master of Arts Screen: Business and Leadership at the Australian, Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in 2018. Prior to that, she spent a year in Winnipeg, Canada, working for the World Indigenous Television Broadcasters Network hosted by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN). Angela currently serves on the Academic Board of the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA).

Lee Naimo is a professional writer, actor, comedian and government employee. As one-third of the musical comedy troupe, The Axis of Awesome,he has toured the world and written songs and sketches that have achieved hundreds of millions of views online. Over the ten year history, the Axis of Awesome built an army of fans worldwide, in part due to their hugely popular Four Chords song, which itself has over 100 million hits on YouTube.

Lee is an accomplished solo performer and writer, having recently been the head writer on Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia as well as writing several solo sketch shows that have toured Australia. He is also the co-creator and Creative Producer of Insert Coin, an online sketch comedy series about video games with over 2 million views. Since 2018 he has worked for Screen Australia as an Online Investment Manager, where he has supported hugely successful online content such as Sarah’s Channel, Content, Superwog, Over and Out, Glennridge Secondary College, At Home Alone Together and many more. He is also responsible for setting up initiatives such as Pitcher Perfect with VidCon, Digital Originals with SBS and Snapchat + Screen Australia, which is the first-ever Australian partnership with mobile platform Snapchat.

Bobby Romia is the Head of Development at Screen Australia. He is a former producer, writer and broadcaster with 15 years of industry experience. Prior to joining Screen Australia, Bobby was Acting Senior Investment Manager at Screen NSW where he managed projects including Bali 2002, Underbelly: Vanishing Act, After The Verdict, Bump, Upright, Here Out West, The Secret She Keeps, Frayed, June Again, The Drover’s Wife, True Colours and Hardball, and talent escalation initiatives such as Talent Camp NSW and the Emerging Writers’ Incubator. Bobby previously worked as a Commissioning Supervisor (Scripted Drama, Comedy & Entertainment) and Producer at SBS Australia and NITV. He has also worked with Screentime Australia, Hopscotch Films, eOne Entertainment, and Screentime New Zealand in Auckland. Bobby holds a Master of Arts in Screenwriting at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS).

Christopher is Head of Scripted at Screen Australia, where he manages the Feature Film Production Fund, Feature Film Enhancement Fund, General Drama (TV) Fund, and Children’s Program Production Fund. Christopher has previously worked in senior development roles for production companies in Australia and the UK, and within government funding bodies, including as Director of Development for Screen QLD. He has also worked for the New York based film sales company FilmNation, and began his career as a talent agent.

Alex West has produced and directed over 40 factual and documentary series and specials for many TV networks, including BBC, C4, Five, ABC, SBS, and National Geographic.

He began his career in the USA, before working with the BBC.

Immigration Nation: The Secret History of Us, was nominated for the AACTA/AFI as Best Documentary Series and the Prime Ministers prize for Australian History. Alex is a three time Logie nominee.

He has recently produced several high profile ABC doco series. The Art of Australia, and Bodyline: The Ultimate Test, ‘Making Australia Great’, ‘Revolution School’ and ‘Monash & Me’.

With Director Nicholas Brown, in 2020 Alex won the Emmy Award for best nature film for ‘The Serengeti Rules’.

Alex was appointed Head of Documentary at Screen Australia in July 2021.
